Rebel Wilson’s new film, “Girl Group,” is described as a pop comedy reminiscent of “Pitch Perfect” and “Bad News Bears.” The film follows a band of misfits competing to become signed music artists, with Wilson playing their coach.
The movie opens in 1997, showcasing a girl group named Gurlfriends performing at a London school. The group experiences initial success before member Tassie, played in the present day by Wilson, attempts a solo career that fails. She subsequently falls into alcoholism before being given community service at a youth center.
At the youth center, Tassie is tasked with mentoring a new generation of Gen Z performers for an upcoming competition. She sees this as an opportunity to rehabilitate her image, but the teens have their own ambitions. The film features performances from Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts of The Pussycat Dolls, Mel C of the Spice Girls, and Shaznay Lewis of All Saints. Despite this “veritable diva corps d’elite,” the film does not reach the emotional heights of “Pitch Perfect,” instead existing as a “congenial romp” that quickly fades from memory. Wilson, known for playing “the fat funny girl” in her earlier work, focuses on “sparkly merriment” throughout the film.
