Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned on Thursday that Russia is planning hybrid attacks, potentially using drones or rockets, targeting countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland. Tusk stated Russia intends to portray any such attacks as accidental in an effort to undermine NATO’s willingness to defend a member state. He indicated intelligence from NATO, Ukrainian, and U.S. secret services, including the CIA, suggests a “real risk” of projectiles entering NATO territory and causing destruction, with Russia aiming to disrupt Ukraine’s supply lines by targeting border crossings. In the past week, four incidents have occurred on the Poland-Ukraine border and several others on the Ukraine-Moldova border.
Tusk emphasized Russia’s increasing use of jet-powered drones, which are harder to detect, and noted Russia is currently not seeking peace talks without Ukraine’s “total capitulation.” He warned that destroying border crossings would hinder Poland’s ability to provide aid to Ukraine this winter, as it did last winter. Intelligence suggests Russia intends to intensify attacks on six major Ukrainian cities. Tusk announced a trip to Ukraine to discuss defenses against the new drones and sanctions with partners, including Slovakia, following a near-miss drone strike on a train near the Polish-Ukrainian border.
U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that “major progress is being made toward establishing a US Army base in Poland” after a US delegation visited the country. Tusk has been issuing increasingly specific warnings about potential hybrid attacks for months.
