New Orleans’ cocktail culture, the birthplace of drinks like the Sazerac and Hurricane, continues to thrive with both historic establishments and new venues. The city’s bars emphasize community, tradition, and increasingly, locally-sourced spirits.
Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, a cocktail historian and author of seven award-winning books on Tiki drinks, has opened Latitude 29 at 321 N Peters St. The bar, located on the ground floor of the Bienville House Hotel, features a menu spanning 90 years of Tiki history, including both vintage recipes unearthed by Berry and his original creations. Instead of typical Tiki decor, Latitude 29 boasts polished antique woods commissioned by neo-Tiki artists Bosko Hrnjak and Danny Gallardo. The signature drink, Outcast Of The Islands, is a gin cocktail with fresh lime juice, ginger liqueur, cinnamon and orgeat syrups, Herbsaint, and ginger beer served in a hand-carved ice shell.
NightBloom, located at 3100 St Claude Ave, opened in 2024 and is helmed by the team from Bacchanal, a celebrated wine bar. NightBloom focuses on showcasing spirits from women-owned, minority-owned, and single-family distilleries in the region, including Exclave Spirits and River Basin Distillery. The bar’s interior is described as dusty pink and teal, with warmly lit purple and red lighting. Justin “Juice” is the general manager and head bartender.
