Former NFL tight end George Wrightster has accused the Michigan Wolverines of failing quarterback Bryce Underwood both on and off the field. The criticism stems from Underwood’s performance in Week 1 against Western Michigan and a perceived lack of preparation for a recent press conference.
Wrightster argued that Michigan committed a “media relations failure” by allowing Underwood to face questions about his job security without first informing him of comments made by coach Kyle Whittingham. Whittingham had stated Underwood remains the starter, but that position is “not something that’s infinite.” Underwood, when asked about the comments, responded, “There was comments about that? That's cool. I didn't see that.” Wrightster said, “How does Michigan put its starting quarterback at a podium without preparing him for the single most obvious question that he's going to get? That's not scripting a kid. That's preparing him.”
Beyond the press conference, Wrightster also criticized the program for not providing Underwood with a dedicated quarterbacks coach throughout his freshman season. He described this as “insane” considering Underwood is “the number one recruit in America” and carries “one of the most famous brands in the sport.” Wrightster noted that Underwood, who is 18 years old, is potentially worth $10 to $12 million to the program.
Underwood completed 54.5 percent of his passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the 13-12 win over Western Michigan, with two turnovers leading to Broncos points. The program has since hired Jason Beck as offensive coordinator and Koy Detmer Jr. to coach quarterbacks. Underwood and the Wolverines will face No. 11 Oklahoma at the Big House.
