Maryland volleyball defeated Princeton 3-0 on Saturday night, achieving their best start to a season since 2021 with a 6-1 record. Sydney Bryant led the Terps’ offensive attack.
Maryland came out strong, beginning the match with a 5-1 lead after a kill from Melby and a service ace from Brooklynne Brass. Duru Gökçen and Eva Rohrbach anchored the defense, contributing to a 9-3 lead before Princeton called a timeout. Rohrbach followed the timeout with a kill. Veteran outside hitter Bryant added three crucial kills as Maryland extended its lead, ultimately winning the first set 25-17 despite a late attempt by Princeton to close the gap.
The second set saw a more balanced start, but Maryland pulled ahead with a 3-0 run fueled by kills from Melby and Rohrbach. After a brief resurgence from Princeton’s Sarah Hom, the Terps went on an 8-2 run, led by Gökçen and Raina Chwialkowski. Bryant added three more kills, and Melby secured the set win with her eighth kill of the game, 25-15.
Princeton briefly took the lead in the third set with kills from Clark Taylor, but Maryland quickly regained control. Head coach Adam Hughes praised the senior leadership on the team, stating, “I’ll give a lot of the shoutout to the seniors. In the beginning of the year, we talked about how freshmen were going to be a big factor and how the seniors are going to have to be big leaders and be composed, and they've done that. It's been at practice, it's been at meetings, it's been across the board — not just how we perform in matches,”
