A new analysis of nearly 10,000 patients suggests that knee braces, water therapy, and exercise may be more effective than many high-tech treatments for knee osteoarthritis. The research, led by Yuan Luo of the First People's Hospital of Neijiang, China, analyzed 139 clinical trials to determine which non-drug therapies provide the most relief from pain, stiffness, and mobility issues associated with the condition.
The study, published in *PLOS One*, compared 12 different approaches to managing knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Researchers utilized a network meta-analysis, allowing them to compare multiple therapies across numerous trials and assess their relative performance. KOA affects millions of older adults, causing persistent pain and limiting everyday activities. Many patients currently rely on anti-inflammatory medications, which can carry risks of gastrointestinal and cardiovascular problems, increasing interest in drug-free alternatives.
Knee braces ranked highest overall, demonstrating reductions in pain, stiffness, and improvements in physical function. Water-based therapy proved particularly effective at reducing pain, while regular exercise consistently improved both pain and physical function. While some technologically advanced treatments like high-intensity laser therapy and shock wave therapy showed some benefit, ultrasound consistently ranked among the least effective options.
