GTK 4.24, the newest stable release of the GTK4 toolkit, was released Friday. The update is designed to pair with the upcoming GNOME 51 desktop release and includes improvements to fractional scaling, frame timing, and SVG support.
The toolkit now supports the Wayland ext-background-effect protocol, enabling blurred backgrounds for windows, such as those found in terminal applications. It also incorporates Wayland’s text input v3.2 protocol and other unspecified improvements. GTK 4.24 enhances fractional scaling by snapping contents to device pixel boundaries, giving users greater control over rendering on devices utilizing fractional scaling.
For users sensitive to motion, GTK 4.24 respects reduced motion settings, disabling animations when enabled. The GDK frame-clock has been reworked to improve precision and reduce frame drops, and GTK4 on Android now aligns frame timing with vsyncs. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) support within GTK has also been significantly improved.
While planned session save/restore functionality was intended for this release, it has been moved to GTK 4.26. GTK 4.24 is available for download from GNOME’s GitLab for those wishing to build the toolkit before the official GNOME 51 release.
