GNOME developers are establishing a formal Request for Comments (RFC) process to address significant technical changes. Sophie Herold drafted the proposal, which is now under discussion by GNOME stakeholders. The current process is described as long-used, ad-hoc, and informal.
The proposed RFC process aims to standardize how major changes with broad repercussions are implemented. Each RFC will be a written proposal submitted as a merge request. Stakeholders will be identified and notified for each RFC, with teams also able to self-identify. Discussions will take place on GNOME Discourse.
The process allows anyone to raise concerns, which are addressed after acceptance by RFC editors. Proposals for changes to the RFC itself are also welcome. Following a period of discussion, a final comment period will be announced, culminating in a decision to accept or reject the RFC, with a 14-day window for final concerns before a final decision.
In addition to the RFC discussion, recent GNOME activities include enhancements to the Nautilus file manager and a new GNOME Shell extension that creates a digital rain effect on the desktop.
