After five years in development, a free combat demo for *Free Stars: Children of Infinity*, the sequel to *The Ur-Quan Masters*, is now available. The demo allows players to engage in arcade-style, one-on-one space combat with a roster of 38 ships.
The combat demo, released on Steam and GOG for Windows, Mac, and Linux, features nearly 40 ships from the game. Players can assemble fleets and battle in a *SpaceWar*-style arena. The ships each have unique maneuvering characteristics, weapons, and special abilities. All ships from *The Ur-Quan Masters* are included except for the Slylandro probe. New ships from *Children of Infinity* and those designed by Kickstarter backers are also available.
Ars Technica’s contributor, who has been part of the *Children of Infinity* writing team since 2021, stated they have been working as a volunteer, contributing NPC dialogue and story elements. They emphasized their lack of financial involvement in the project. *Free Stars: Children of Infinity* is a space adventure RPG, similar to *The Ur-Quan Masters*, *Starflight*, and *Starflight 2*. The released demo is specifically the arcade-style “melee” portion of the larger game.
