Tottenham Hotspur secured their first point of the Premier League season with a draw against Nottingham Forest, but remain without a league goal in their opening three games for the first time since 1974-75. Manager Roberto De Zerbi preached patience, citing the team’s ten new senior arrivals as a reason for their current struggles.
The stalemate at City Ground followed defeats to Brentford and Newcastle, leaving Spurs with a concerning lack of goals. Despite the team’s significant summer transfer spending – exceeding £300m, contributing to a record £3.49bn Premier League outlay – De Zerbi believes it will take time for the new players to integrate and establish a team identity. He noted that the squad had only begun working together last Thursday.
De Zerbi expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “We are disappointed for the result but for the performance very happy. Considering we started to work together last Thursday for the first time.” He emphasized the need for improvement in all areas, including organization with and without the ball, and in the final third. He also highlighted their defensive performance as positive.
He criticized the team’s decision-making in attacking positions, using an example involving Mohammed Marmoush. “The chance when Marmoush shot, we had Robertson overlapping. If we take the right decision and if we play with Robertson on the second post there is Kudus to score,” he explained. De Zerbi wants to see more composure from his players when in promising positions. He also noted the opponent’s style of play, describing it as “long ball and second ball,” but said his team won many duels.
De Zerbi acknowledged the challenge of building a team quickly through player acquisitions. “We bought very, very good players but you can’t just build the team with the names like in Football Manager,” he told Sky Sports.
