Nicola Coughlan, Matt Lucas, and Hugh Bonneville are among over 80 industry professionals backing a campaign called “Save Our Voices Now,” which advocates for legal protections against AI voice replication. The group is urging U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham to introduce legislation granting individuals the right to their own voice.
The initiative was co-founded by audiobook narrator Alice Sockett, who stated the issue poses “an existential threat to our entire industry” and that voice theft “increases every week.” Bonneville, known for roles in “Paddington” and “Downton Abbey,” emphasized the personal connection to one’s voice, saying, “My voice is unique, it’s mine, it’s part of my identity. So is yours. That’s worth speaking up about,” and noted his quote was handwritten, not AI-generated.
“Derry Girls” star Siobhán McSweeney expressed concern that legal frameworks and artist rights aren’t keeping pace with AI advancements. She believes a balance can be struck, allowing AI to be a beneficial tool rather than rendering artists obsolete, stating, “I believe that there is a way to work alongside AI and to use it as a tool that benefits us rather than rendering us obsolete.” McSweeney added, “Our audiences want that human connection. Not AI.”
While some actors, like Harry Shearer of “The Simpsons,” are exploring legal protections for their voices, others have permitted AI recreation of their voices posthumously. The estate of Gene Wilder recently approved the use of an AI-recreated voice for a new Netflix “Willy Wonka” reality series, with Karen B. Wilder, Gene Wilder’s wife, stating the project celebrates “the warmth and imagination” he brought to the role.
