Cinematographer Adam Pietkiewicz will receive the Variety TIFF Artisan Award for his work on the film “Angh,” which tells the story of the last surviving chief of a village in Nagaland, India, in the 1960s. The film, directed by Theja Rio, explores the challenges faced by a Konyak Naga family as their traditional culture clashes with the arrival of a Christian missionary.

Pietkiewicz, who is currently docked in northeastern Poland after sailing the Baltic Sea, expressed his honor at receiving the award. “Receiving this award means the world to me,” he said over Zoom. “I couldn’t believe it because so many past honorees are filmmakers I look up to, so being included alongside them is a big honor.” He emphasized that the recognition extends beyond himself, stating, “They deserve to be seen and heard because this region is not well recognized around the world.”

“Angh” was shot on 16mm film, a choice advocated for by Rio to capture the “rough and raw environment” of the story. Pietkiewicz utilized Arri cameras with Ultra Prime lenses, combining 16mm with Kodak’s VISION3 250D and VISION3 500T film stocks. He explained, “We both knew this format was a great idea for this kind of story. It perfectly reproduced color and added to the grainy look of the film.”

Filming presented unique challenges due to the lack of reliable electricity in Nagaland. Nighttime scenes required innovative solutions. Pietkiewicz and his team collaborated with Anghlong Konyak, who plays the village chief, to create fire torches enhanced with a flammable liquid to provide sufficient exposure. Pietkiewicz and Rio share a minimalist filmmaking approach, favoring simple camera setups. The scene depicting the village burning down was filmed entirely in camera, without the use of visual effects or CGI. Despite this minimalist approach to filming, the team created a detailed planning document, dubbed the “Book of Angh,” to meticulously outline each scene.
