A new Netflix documentary, ‘Schumacher ‘94 – The Birth of a Legend,’ will detail Michael Schumacher’s 1994 Formula 1 season, the year he secured his first of seven world championships. The film arrives worldwide on October 2 and focuses on the events surrounding his championship win, including a controversial collision with Damon Hill at the season finale in Australia.
The then-25-year-old Schumacher won eight grands prix, ultimately clinching the title by a single point. The Australian Grand Prix saw a collision between Schumacher and Damon Hill, resulting in both drivers’ retirement and securing Schumacher’s championship. The Benetton team faced allegations of using illegal traction control software throughout the season, a topic the documentary is expected to address. Netflix describes the project as a “granular, in-depth look at the year that changed everything” in Formula 1.
1994 was also a tragic year for Formula 1, marked by the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger at the San Marino Grand Prix. These events will be included in the documentary, illustrating how Schumacher’s success unfolded against a backdrop of significant loss and reshaping Formula 1 safety standards.
The release of the trailer coincided with the Italian Grand Prix, where Ferrari paid tribute to Schumacher. The SF-26 car sported a revised livery inspired by the F310, Schumacher’s first Ferrari, and featured his ‘MS’ logo and seven stars. Drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc raced in special suits, and Leclerc unveiled a Schumacher-themed helmet. Netflix promoted the film with the line “One goal. One season. The start of something great,” positioning 1994 as the beginning of Schumacher’s defining career.
