After being shelved by Warner Bros., ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ is now playing in theaters thanks to a deal with Ketchup Entertainment. The film’s release follows a fan-led campaign to save the project, which was initially intended for streaming. Director Dave Green and star Will Forte celebrated the film’s theatrical debut, emphasizing the importance of movies reaching an audience.
The hybrid live-action and animated movie, set in the Looney Tunes universe, centers on Wile E. Coyote suing the Acme Corporation for faulty products. The cast includes Will Forte, John Cena, Lana Condor, Eric Bauza, and Martha Kelly.
In November 2023, Warner Bros. decided not to release the completed film, opting instead for a $30 million tax write-off of the $70 million production. The studio cited a shift in global strategy toward theatrical releases following the relaunch of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. This decision sparked backlash from fans and those involved with the film, who advocated for its release.
Ketchup Entertainment acquired the worldwide distribution rights in March 2024 for around $50 million, paving the way for the theatrical release. Director Dave Green stated, “COYOTE VS. ACME IS FINALLY, GLORIOUSLY, IN THEATERS NOW. Which means one thing. WE WON. You can go see this movie. In a theater. In your favorite seat. With your favorite snacks. With your favorite people. You can head into a dark room and laugh with strangers. Together. Congratulations to everyone who made this happen.” He further explained the release is “a record of the cast and crew…who poured so much love and passion into it over years and years,” and thanked Ketchup Entertainment for “hearing the audience.” Green concluded, “This is a celebration, it’s proof that movies don’t just go away. We make work so it can be seen and shared — that’s the whole reason we do what we do.”
Will Forte replied to Green’s post on X, stating, “Beautifully put, Dave.” He also shared a video highlighting the film’s themes of “hope and determination,” “fighting injustice,” and the importance of persistence.
