Zambia Suspends Presidential Vote Counting Following Violence and Ballot Theft

Zambia has suspended the nationwide counting and publication of presidential election results following reports of violence and the theft of ballot papers. The Electoral Commission of Zambia ordered the immediate halt on Friday, citing the "security situation and continued threats of violence."

The suspension follows reports of attacks on polling officials and staff. The electoral commission stated that this violence "resulted in the theft of marked ballot papers," though the commission did not identify who may be responsible for the theft.

Authorities have appealed for calm while election officials work to resolve the disruptions. The electoral commission indicated it will reassess the suspension within 24 hours, with official presidential results now expected on Monday.
