A college volleyball match between Nebraska and Missouri at Wrigley Field in Chicago was suspended Sunday night due to hazardous court conditions caused by humidity. Despite efforts to dry the court, including assistance from players and removal of the center court logo, the surface remained unsafe for play. Players entertained the crowd of 43,067 with a dance competition during the delays.
The NCAA hosted two women’s volleyball matches at the iconic baseball field on Sunday. The first match, between Kentucky and Penn State, proceeded without issue. However, the Nebraska-Missouri game faced challenges as night fell and humid conditions caused players to slip while playing.
Crews attempted to dry the court, and players from both teams assisted by using towels. According to the NCAA website, the logo at the center of the court was removed to improve traction. To maintain energy during the delays, the teams initiated a dance battle.
The match was ultimately suspended due to the continued issues with the court surface. The University of Nebraska stated that rescheduling the match at Wrigley Field was not possible. Following the announcement, several Nebraska seniors apologized to the fans, with Bergen Reilly, a setter for Nebraska, saying, “We wanted to give you guys our all and we didn’t do that tonight.”
Nebraska’s Andi Jackson then led a rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You Been Gone,” inviting Missouri players to join her in singing a cappella for the crowd before they departed. The event drew 43,067 attendees, making it the second-most attended women’s volleyball event in league history, behind the 92,000 who attended a 2023 match at Memorial Stadium in Nebraska. The University of Nebraska posted to Facebook thanking fans for their support, stating, “There are truly no greater fans in college volleyball and we thank you for always coming along for the ride!”
