Cinema admissions across the UK reached 17,000,838 in August, marking a 56 percent increase compared to the same month in 2025. This makes August 2026 the strongest August for UK cinemas since 2018 and the second-biggest month overall since the start of the pandemic, trailing only July 2023 which benefitted from the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon.
The surge in attendance is largely attributed to the success of two major blockbusters: Christopher Nolan’s *Odyssey*, which has grossed £89m in the UK, and *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, which has earned £77m. These figures align with a broader trend of recovery across European cinemas.
According to data from Gower Street and the International Union of Cinemas, the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) box office increased by 88 percent year-on-year, exceeding $4 billion globally. France experienced its best August on record with 19.9 million admissions – double the number from August 2025 – since monthly records began in 1980. Italy also saw record-breaking results, achieving its best June-August period ever with 20.8 million admissions and €162.3 million in box office receipts.
Significant year-on-year increases were also reported in Spain (+71%) and the Netherlands (+77%). UNIC’s report highlighted that, alongside *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* and *The Odyssey*, successful local productions such as the French drama *De Gaulle*, the German comedy *Steckerlsfischfiasko*, and the Spanish family film *Tadeo Jones 4* contributed to the strong summer performance.
