Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Monken offered positive remarks about quarterback Baker Mayfield before the team’s upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns. Monken described Mayfield as a “great football player” and “highly competitive,” emphasizing his pride and desire to perform well, irrespective of the opponent.
The Buccaneers began the 2026 season with a 33-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Mayfield committed multiple turnovers during the game, contributing to Tampa Bay’s defeat despite a relatively strong offensive performance. The team will now face the Browns, who originally drafted Mayfield as the number one overall pick nearly a decade ago.
Monken stated, “He's a great football player and highly competitive, and it's irrespective of playing the Browns. He's very prideful. He wants to play good football, and he's a great football player,” according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com on X, formerly Twitter. Mayfield recently signed a long-term extension with the Buccaneers. He has previously expressed frustration with former teams both publicly and through his play on the field.
While Mayfield has generally played well for the Buccaneers, his performance declined towards the end of last season, and turnovers were again an issue in the Week 1 loss to the Bengals. The Browns, who were defeated by the Jacksonville Jaguars in their season opener, may present an opportunity for Mayfield and the Buccaneers to regain momentum.
