Sheryl Crow received the BMI Troubadour Award Monday night in Nashville, an honor recognizing artists in Americana and rootsy rock ‘n’ roll. The event featured performances by Olivia Rodrigo, Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, and others, all covering Crow’s songs.
The BMI Troubadour Award is typically given to artists like John Fogerty and Lucinda Williams. Crow, considered a major non-country artist working in Nashville, was honored at an intimate, invite-only dinner held at BMI’s headquarters. The event included a mini-concert with performances by several prominent musicians.
Olivia Rodrigo surprised attendees by flying in to perform “Strong Enough.” Jason Isbell opened the performances with “Run Baby Run,” followed by Melissa Etheridge singing “If It Makes You Happy,” Lauren Daigle performing “Every Day Is a Winding Road,” Eric Church covering “Leaving Las Vegas,” and Chris Stapleton performing “I Shall Believe.”
Rodrigo shared a story about Crow’s generosity, recalling a gift of a guitar after they met at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “I just firstly wanted to say what an honor it is to be here tonight celebrating someone incredible,” Rodrigo said. “Obviously Sheryl is the most magnificent singer-songwriter artist ever, but what inspires me the most about you is your heart and your kindness and your generosity…I was like, ‘This guitar’s awesome. I love it.’ She goes, ‘Oh, do you want it?’ And I was like, ‘Sure. I’m not gonna take Sheryl Crow’s guitar.’ And wouldn’t you know it, the next day, I woke up and I got a package and it was Sheryl Crow’s guitar.”
In her acceptance speech, Crow joked about being a “spoiled, legacy artist” and suggested the Grammys should create a “Best Old” award. The evening also featured video testimonials from the Chicks and Brandi Carlile, as well as a speech from Jeff Trott, Crow’s longtime co-writer and studio guitarist, who recounted canceling a deal to join the Wallflowers to work with Crow.
