Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military leader convicted of genocide and war crimes during the 1992-95 Bosnian War, has died at the age of 84 while in detention in The Hague. He was serving a life sentence after being found guilty of atrocities including the Srebrenica massacre, in which approximately 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were killed – Europe’s deadliest massacre since World War II. He also led forces that besieged Sarajevo.
Mladic commanded troops during the brutal conflict that claimed over 100,000 lives. He reportedly ordered his troops to “scorch the brains” of Bosnian Muslims and publicly proclaimed himself a “Serbian God,” according to NPR. The UN tribunal for war crimes sentenced him to life in prison in 2017. Serbian state media reported he died in a UN prison hospital after suffering several strokes in recent months.
Outlets including the New York Times and Politico refer to Mladic as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” a moniker reflecting the scale of violence carried out under his command. Thousands of Bosniaks and Bosnian Croats were murdered, tortured, and displaced by forces under his leadership.
