Poorna Jagannathan, who plays Zoe Macon in HBO Max’s “Lanterns,” discussed the shocking reveal in Episode 5 that her character is the Manhunter. Jagannathan stated she was unaware of the plot twist until receiving the script for Episode 4, and described Zoe’s actions as a desperate attempt to secure her own survival by leveraging the vulnerabilities of others.
The episode delves into the origins of the Manhunter’s power in Rushville, showing a past incident where Zoe saved Sheriff Kerry from gangsters. Zoe secured Kerry’s loyalty by eliminating the threat and establishing a conditional agreement: Kerry’s safety in exchange for protecting Zoe when needed. “Her survival depends on you agreeing to your survival. It’s a Faustian play she makes,” Jagannathan explained, highlighting the transactional nature of Zoe’s relationships with the town’s residents.
As Antaan and his team approach Rushville, Zoe anticipates the conflict and prepares the town for battle. Meanwhile, Hal traps John in a crashed car, intending to allow a shootout between Antaan’s forces and Will Macon’s militia while he pursues Zoe to deliver her to the Guardians. Zoe arrives at the crash site and allows the car to explode, leaving John severely injured. She then offers to heal him in exchange for his silence regarding the Guardians’ role in creating the Manhunters.
Jagannathan noted that Zoe strategically waits for individuals to be at their weakest—near death—before offering assistance. She believes Zoe saw securing the gratitude and protection of a Green Lantern as “her crown jewel,” and quickly assessed who posed the greatest threat to her plans.
