One Killed, Six Injured in Shooting at California Halloween Store

One person was killed and six others injured in a shooting at a Spirit Halloween store inside the Solano Town Center mall in Fairfield, California, on Friday evening. Fairfield police responded to the scene at approximately 8:30 p.m., finding seven people with gunshot wounds. One victim died from their injuries, and the six others were hospitalized, with at least three in critical condition. The identities of the victims have not been released.

Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall stated during a press conference that detectives are actively investigating the shooting, speaking with witnesses, and reviewing security footage from the mall’s cameras. “I know the mall has cameras, so hopefully we'll get some of that footage,” Marshall said. Authorities have not released any information regarding a suspect or motive.

A witness told KCRA that his wife heard approximately seven shots fired before people began fleeing the mall. Another witness, quoted in the Vacaville Reporter, said a person ran into a nearby Chipotle stating that shots had been fired. SWAT teams searched the mall, including the Regal Edwards movie theater, where a showing of “Halloween” was underway. A moviegoer, Caitlin Fry, told CBS Sacramento that the presence of SWAT officers evoked memories of the Aurora theater shooting.

The FBI is assisting with the investigation, sending agents to the mall. The temporary Halloween store occupied the space previously held by Best Buy within the 130-store mall.
