Mariska Hargitay is preparing to host the 78th Emmy Awards on Monday with assistance from the writing team behind *The Late Show with Stephen Colbert*. The team has been working with Hargitay for the past couple of months, even setting up shop at the *Law & Order: Special Victims Unit* set.
The Emmy Awards will be held live from Los Angeles and broadcast on NBC and streamed on Peacock. Executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay joined Hargitay at a carpet rollout event in downtown L.A. on Thursday, along with TV Academy chair Chris Abrego and NBC’s Jen Neal. The event also revealed that this year’s Emmys carpet will be blue to commemorate NBC’s 100th anniversary.
Hargitay, fresh off of two Emmy wins for her documentary *My Mom Jayne* at the Creative Arts ceremony, revealed she was collaborating with *The Late Show with Stephen Colbert* writers. Collins confirmed that Ariel Dumas, former head writer for *Colbert*, is leading the writing team. Harmon explained the team “set up shop actually at the SVU offices so that she can pop in and out,” collaborating during downtime on the set of *SVU*. Collins described the unusual scene of Hargitay, as Captain Benson, switching between police work and joke writing, stating, “It’s pretty weird to see Captain Benson come up with the gun and the badge and be like, ‘Welcome to the Emmys, everybody! Here we go!’ and like telling jokes.”
When asked about potential appearances from her *SVU* co-stars, Harmon coyly stated, “she has a lot of friends.” Hargitay herself emphasized her intention to host in her own style, stating, “I think one of the most important things is that I, to quote Frank Sinatra, I gotta do it my way.” She added, “I’m a very different, sort of unconventional host and I love that because I’m not a comedian, so that’s not necessarily what we’re doing. But you’ve gotta be me, right, you’ve gotta show up as your best self, so that’s what I’m doing.”
The telecast will also include a tribute led by Noah Kahan and celebrations of the 30th anniversary of *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* and the 50th anniversary of *Charlie’s Angels*.
