Liverpool Football Club is preparing to sign defender Ronald Araujo permanently from Barcelona for £47 million, anticipating the eventual departure of Virgil van Dijk. The club is also developing several young centre-back prospects, including Jeremy Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, and Mor Talla Ndiaye, to build for the future.
Liverpool anticipates the departure of Virgil van Dijk, who will turn 36 next summer and is entering the final year of his contract. While his deal was extended last year, the club’s board appears unlikely to offer another extension. The future direction of the club, including the new sporting director and the involvement of the new consortium led by Amit Bhatia (who own 33% of Liverpool), will also play a role in future decisions.
Araujo has impressed Liverpool during his loan transfer from Barcelona, leading the club to decide to trigger the buy-option clause in his contract. Richard Hughes agreed to the £47 million fee, which is now considered a bargain. Araujo has quickly become an important part of Liverpool’s future plans.
