Norwegian filmmaker Jens Lien is returning to speculative fiction with “Joe’s Assignment,” a comedy exploring the societal impact of automation. The film, starring Trond Fausa Aurvåg, is currently in post-production as a Norway-Greece co-production.
The film follows Joe, an ambulance driver who loses his job to self-driving vehicles. He is then enrolled in a government program designed to provide mandatory tasks for the unemployed, preventing societal passivity. However, Joe discovers his assigned task is missing within the system, leading him on a search for purpose and connection.
Lien, known for his 2006 film “The Bothersome Man” and HBO Nordic’s “Beforeigners,” described the film as a spiritual successor to his earlier work, sharing a similar tone and humor. He noted the “intriguing and frightening” aspect of automated processes operating without human involvement, questioning “Why on earth are we working so hard to make ourselves redundant?”
Producer Kristin Emblem presented clips from the film at New Nordic Films in Haugesund, depicting Joe’s interactions with the government and his search for his assignment. Emblem emphasized that the film is “a warm and humorous look at what happens when society no longer needs us,” focusing on “the human capacity for kindness and meaningful relationships.”
The film is backed by the Norwegian Film Institute, the Nordisk Film & TV Fond, NRK in Norway, Greek public broadcaster ERT, and Alto Invest. Scanbox/Ymer holds the Nordic distribution rights.
