Intel is adding a new command-queue priority ioctl to its Linux driver for Neural Processing Units (NPUs) as part of the upcoming Linux 7.4 kernel release. This feature allows for dynamic adjustment of scheduling priority for command queues running on Intel NPUs, potentially improving performance for both high and low priority workloads.
The change, submitted in the latest drm-misc-next pull request, introduces the DRM_IVPU_PARAM_CMDQ_PRIORITY ioctl. This allows users to both query and update the scheduling priority of existing command queues on Intel NPUs. The NPU firmware is designed to respond to priority changes as soon as possible, even with pending jobs.
Alongside the Intel NPU update, the pull request also includes R-Car V4H DSC support for the RCar-DU driver and Solomon SSD1351 OLED support for the ssd130x driver. These updates represent low-level code improvements and internal changes to various smaller Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) drivers. The drm-misc-next pull is slated for inclusion in DRM-Next, ahead of the Linux 7.4 merge window.
