Mexican filmmakers Tatiana Huezo and Elisa Miller are among six selected to present works-in-progress at the 12th Impulso Morelia film festival, held October 18-20. The event focuses on fostering dialogue and refinement of films before public release.
The 12th Impulso Morelia will showcase projects selected from approximately 90 submissions. Three of the chosen entries are directed by women, including Huezo (“Tempestad,” “Prayers for the Stolen”) and Miller (“Hurricane Season”). Both filmmakers are backed by Pimienta Films, the production company behind “Roma.”
Impulso head Andrea Stavenhagen emphasized the empathetic approach to character development in this year’s selections. “I think there’s a really interesting variety this year and a sensibility that runs throughout the entire selection. The characters aren’t simply vulnerable—they’re contradictory and fragile. But across all the films, there’s a desire to approach these characters with great empathy. They speak, in different ways, to the vulnerability of being human,” she said.
Stavenhagen explained that Impulso Morelia is designed to be more than just a showcase. “Impulso is more than just a space for exhibition; it’s a space for dialogue, for listening and exchange—not simply for showcasing films. What matters most to us is that the discussion and feedback we receive can help enrich and refine the films before they reach the public,” she told Variety. “It’s a work-in-progress forum in the fullest sense: an opportunity to receive guidance on the editing, discuss the current cut and engage in dialogue with fellow filmmakers and industry professionals. It’s about opening things up and allowing other filmmakers and professionals to contribute to the process of finding the film’s final form.”
A panel of industry experts will assess the projects, led by Ted Hope, co-founder of The Good Machine, and Julio Chavezmontes of Piano (“The Meltdown”). Other judges include Tribeca director Cara Cusumano, Sandrine Dumas, and Carlos R. Rios.
Awards include the José María Riba Impulso Morelia 12 Award, a $14,740 (250,000 pesos) cash prize for post-production or promotion, presented by Cinépolis Distribution and Profest 2026. Estudios Churubusco Azteca will award image and sound post-production services valued at $41,280 (700,000 pesos), potentially split between two projects. Additional post-production services will be awarded by Estudios Splendor Omnia and Caffeine. The LatAm Cinema platform will provide a $1,500 promotional campaign to the José María Riba Award winner.
Among the selected projects is Tatiana Huezo’s “Galerna,” produced by Nicolás Celis, Tatiana Huezo, and María Zamora, through Pimienta Films and Elastica Films. The film follows Lúa and Noé as they cast first-time actors.
