The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has announced its Carte Blanche lineup, featuring film selections from actor Fan Bingbing, director Kim Jeewoon, and cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo. The festival’s Busan Story Market has also added Thai remakes and Hong Kong titles.
Carte Blanche invites prominent figures to select films that influenced them and discuss them with audiences after screenings. Fan Bingbing chose Park Chan-wook’s “The Handmaiden,” stating, “The Handmaiden weaves together desire, deception and power through its exquisite aesthetic, while following two women trapped in their own predicaments as they confront one another, ultimately saving themselves and breaking free from the constraints of fate.” She further described the women in the film as “both dangerous and free,” captivated by the film’s “clarity, boldness and vitality.”
Kim Jeewoon selected George Miller’s “Mad Max,” explaining, “’Mad Max’ is the beginning of a great legend and the wildest, toughest, and most instinctive film in the entire series.” He noted the film’s lasting impact, saying the “shock and fear” he felt upon first viewing it remain vivid, and that it proves what “true ‘cinematic cinema’ can be.” Hong Kyung-pyo chose Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “Three Colours: Blue,” commenting, “Every time I watch ‘Three Colours: Blue,’ the loss and solitude captured in its blue hues feel new, and it reminds me once again of how deeply images can convey emotion.”
The Busan Story Market (BSM), operated by the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM), has added nine titles. This includes four Hong Kong IP selections, bringing the total official selections to 29, and a new Remake IP section featuring five Thai films. A pitching session for the Thai titles will be held on October 10, with business meetings running through October 13. The Thai films include the horror mystery “Midnight Incense,” the coming-of-age comedy “Happy Monday(s),” the family thriller “Home for Rent,” the horror-romance “My Boo,” and the wedding comedy “Congrats My Ex!” The Hong Kong additions, selected by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), comprise three animated shorts and one comic.
