The San Francisco 49ers signed Khalid Kareem off the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad on Friday, having added him to the team just Tuesday. The Falcons quickly responded by signing Bralen Trice to fill the vacant spot on their practice squad.
Kareem previously spent parts of the last two seasons with the Falcons, contributing in run defense and applying pressure. He now reunites with 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who was the Falcons’ head coach during Kareem’s first two seasons with the team. “Players often perform better when they trust the person calling the plays,” the report noted, suggesting this connection was a factor in Kareem’s decision.
The timing of Kareem’s departure left the Falcons with little time to react to maintain depth. The 49ers recognized value in a player Atlanta had recently claimed.
Bralen Trice, a former third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, joins the Falcons’ practice squad after missing his first two NFL seasons due to injuries. He was cut after a quiet summer but brought back to the practice squad. “Back on the practice squad, he’ll have a chance to continue to hone his craft and hope to get an opportunity to show he still has the skill that made the Falcons excited to draft him in the first place,” The Falcoholic wrote. The Falcons have been rotating defensive linemen since the 53-man roster deadline. A team source said Trice essentially takes Kareem's spot on the practice squad. The organization hopes Trice can capitalize on this opportunity, believing in the potential that led to his initial drafting.
