MoshiurRahmanAdib has released Conflux, a new Linux icon set designed to offer a modern aesthetic while blending seamlessly into existing desktop environments. The creator developed Conflux after struggling to find an icon pack that wasn’t overly stylized, outdated, or poorly designed.
According to the Github page for the project, “Conflux should blend seamlessly into your system”, so that users don’t notice they are using a new icon theme. The designer noted that many icon sets struggle to provide complete coverage for all applications, and distinctive designs can be easily marred when icons are missing. While Papirus continually expands its coverage, Conflux aims to balance visual appeal with completeness.
Unlike some icon sets, such as GNOME’s Adwaita and Ubuntu’s Yaru, which intentionally leave some icons unthemed, Conflux attempts to provide a consistent look across all applications. The set achieves this by not enforcing a fixed shape or style, allowing unthemed icons to remain visually compatible. Conflux also draws inspiration from other popular icon sets like WhiteSur, Kora, MoreWaita, and Papirus.
The maintainer intentionally omitted icons for well-known software like Firefox, believing these applications already have well-designed or widely recognizable icons. The designer hopes Conflux will offer a more visually interesting experience than current UI trends, which they describe as featuring “flat uniform shapes, block colours, simplistic designs.”
Users can install Conflux on Ubuntu by extracting the theme folder to their hidden ~/.local/share/icons directory. Those with git installed can use the command line: `mkdir -p ~/.local/share/icons; cd ~/.local/share/icons; git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/MoshiurRahmanAdib/Conflux-Icon-Theme.git`. After installation, users need to edit the `index.theme` file to inherit Yaru, and then select Conflux as the icon theme in the GNOME Tweaks tool (Appearance > Icons).
