Emily, Erin, and Hattie Burke are making waves in the sport of bowls, representing Gloucestershire and England at the county level. The sisters took up the sport during the pandemic as a way to spend time together and are now inspiring others to try it.

Emily, 20, Erin, 17, and Hattie Burke, 16, all play for Gloucestershire. Erin also represents England, becoming the first player from Coleford Bowling Club to compete internationally for the England U18s. “It's such a good feeling because you're not just representing yourself you're representing Gloucestershire and Coleford,” Erin explained. “Everyone was really happy for me, and they just celebrate it all the time.”

The sisters began playing bowls after Covid restrictions eased, seeking an outdoor activity for their family. Their grandfather, Patrick Burke, has been a member of Coleford Bowling Club since the 1980s, and their parents and grandmother also participate. Patrick expressed his pride, stating, “It is wonderful. I'm so proud of them. I never ever expected any of my family to be going to those levels of bowls, I've never got there, I always wanted to.”

The Burke sisters aim to encourage more young people to take up bowls, highlighting its social benefits. Hattie said, “I feel like you don't really notice your phone 'cause when you're out and about with other people it gives you some social skills.” They have a combined goal of competing at the Commonwealth Games in the future.
