The Boerne Champion Chargers defeated Jay High School in a 25-18, 25-14, 25-8 sweep on Tuesday, beginning their District 26-5A play. The Chargers overcame a slow start in the second set with strong serving performances.
The Chargers trailed 6-2 in the second set after Jay scored five points off Champion errors. Senior libero Brielle Boothe then delivered three consecutive aces to tie the score at 6-6. “Getting those three aces brought our energy up a lot,” Boothe said, adding, “Our team really relies on our energy on the court and even on the bench. And when we're down, we're down. So, that energy just brought it up.”
Champion initially took a 10-6 lead in the first set after a 4-0 run. Junior setter Brady Cooksey noted the team was struggling early, saying, “That was definitely helpful for us because you could see that we were clearly down…Everyone was hitting out. Everyone was hitting into the net. Everyone was getting blocked. So, when you get those points back and (Boothe) goes on a run like that, that really brings the energy back. That was a mental reset, and we just pushed from that.”
Jay’s junior middle blocker, Ta'Naiya Watson, presented a challenge with three blocks and several altered shots, giving the Mustangs a 4-0 lead in the second set and a 7-6 lead later on. However, Champion responded with a 10-0 run fueled by senior defensive specialist Aleah Ramirez’s two aces. Junior outside hitter Abby Marizcurrena said, “That just shows that we can start in that level of a hole, and this team has enough energy and enough fight to be able to come back…It's always the energy, and she's a good leader of energy, too.”
The Chargers continued their strong serving in the third set, with junior Hannah Perez contributing two aces during a 7-1 start. Boothe finished with five aces and nine digs, while Cooksey recorded 20 assists. Marizcurrena led the team with 10 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Finley Weikle surpassed 500 career kills with eight. Champion’s overall record is now 21-5, following a recent 25-21, 25-22, 14-25, 25-22 loss to Dripping Springs. The Chargers are ranked No. 17 in Class 5A by Texas Volleyball Insiders, with Smithson Valley ranked No. 18.
