CROMVOIRT, Netherlands, Seventeen-year-old Asterisk Talley of California aims to become one of the greatest golfers, but is prioritizing development over rushing to the top. Talley recently led the U.S. team to victory at the Junior Solheim Cup in the Netherlands, acting as a senior leader after debuting at the event in 2023 at age 14.
The U.S. team defeated Europe 13-11, despite a final-day fightback from the European team, who scored 8.5 points. “I was always a baby of the team, and now they're kind of looking at me to be the leader and to follow in my footsteps,” Talley told The Athletic after the win. “What was really special to me was to be that this week, but it was also special embracing the energy and the fun. We all had a great time, and that's what really mattered. If we won or lost, we did it with class and pride.” Talley lost her singles match against Europe's Annabel Peaford, but remained positive. “I didn't play bad today; it just didn't work out the way I wanted,” she said. “I know my game's in a good spot, and I'm happy with it. I'm just so proud of our team and what we pulled off today.”
Talley has gained prominence in the golf world, finishing two shots off the lead at the 2024 U.S. Women's Open, where she was the youngest player. She tied for 44th and was the low amateur. She has since participated in five more major championships. Talley was runner-up at the 2025 Augusta National Women's Amateur and tied for fourth earlier this year, despite a quadruple bogey on the 12th hole. She was consoled by Annika Sörenstam and Bryson DeChambeau, as well as her father, Jim, a correctional officer. Her mother, Brandii, is a dental hygienist. Talley finished six strokes behind María José Marín at the Augusta event.
Following disappointing finishes, Talley received encouragement. “Everyone after Augusta said it just wasn't your moment, it wasn't your time, your time will come,” Talley said. She validated this belief by winning the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in August. “It was just great to get that feeling back just to show everyone that I had it in me to win, and it was nice to kind of get back what I lost.”
