‘Submarine Jim’ Launches as Xilam’s New Animated Comedy

Xilam’s latest animated series, “Submarine Jim,” created by Frédéric Martin, follows a naive dolphin in charge of an unusual submarine filled with water and fish. The show blends humor for children with subtle references for older viewers and has already been licensed to broadcasters across Europe and Asia.

Produced with Super RTL and France Télévisions, “Submarine Jim” is a road trip/slapstick comedy adventure. According to Frédéric Martin, the series originated from a search for a contained sitcom setting, leading to the concept of a submarine filled with water, effectively creating an aquarium on wheels. “Then came the question: what’s unique about this submarine? Simple: it’s obviously filled with water! One logical question led to another, until we landed on having an aquarium on wheels, where the fish experience Planet Earth as if they were exploring Mars,” Martin explained.

The series is aimed primarily at children aged 6-10, but Chief Content Officer at Xilam, Caterina Gonnelli-Linden, notes the show incorporates “deeper themes and situations” like leadership and teamwork, appealing to adult audiences as well. “But, for sure, adults can laugh out loud watching the episodes, as we’ve woven within the storyline deeper themes and situations such as, ‘What does it mean to be a good leader?’ and ‘How do you figure out an efficient work split between very different people?’ If you think about it, this comedy draws a lot of ingredients from workplace comedies, but with a light touch.” Martin intentionally layered humor to cater to different age groups.

The visual style of “Submarine Jim” was developed by François Maumont, using traditional brushes and inks that were then digitized. Clémence Bourson, the art director, focused on preserving the handmade quality of the visuals throughout the 52 x 11-minute episodes. The series has been licensed to broadcasters including the BBC (U.K. and Ireland), RTS (French-Switzerland), RTBF and VRT (Belgium), NPO (Netherlands), YLE (Finland), NRK (Norway), Noga (Israel), and Warner Bros. Discovery in EMEA, Latin America, Southeast Asia and South Korea.
